"Remember, remember the fifth of November,The gunpowder treason and plot,I know of no reasonWhy the gunpowder treasonShould ever be forgot."
This bit of popular verse is in reference to Guy Fawkes Day, a holiday celebrated in Britain in commemoration of the successful foiling of the Gunpowder Plot.
The verse was repopularized recently by the movie V for Vendetta, a dystopian story centered around that infamous date, which just so happens to be today's date. I happen to be quite a fan of that movie, as well as having an interest in English history.
In honor of the fifth of November, have a cup of Gunpowder green tea. This Chinese green tea gets its name from the first Europeans who saw the tightly rolled leaves, and decided that they resembled their more explosive namesake.
I must say that's some exciting history because it's related to the culture of the founding of the US. However, it's a history of religious intolerance and I'm glad I'm from my own generation so I'll never face any such pressure.
