Lost Tea Part Two: "Enter 77"

250pxmikhail_eye_1 Brief Recap: On "Lost," the television show about survivors of a plane crash living on a mysterious island, there lives a mysterious one-eyed man. In this week's episode, "Enter 77," we discover his name: Mikhail Bakunin (Andrew Divoff). (Warning: slight spoilers for this episode follow)

In Wednesday night's episode, he serves iced tea to Kate (Evangeline Lilly) and Sayid (Naveen Andrews), informing them that he had grown the tea himself.  In yesterday's post, I mentioned that this would be labor intensive.  Let's assume the iced tea was black tea, since that would be most traditional.  However, because of the pale color of the liquor, it could also have been green or oolong.

Mikhail would first have to grow the plants, either from seeds or cuttings. Usually in the commercial sphere, leaves are not plucked until the plant is several years old, but since the tea is for his personal use (or perhaps the Others') we'll say that he could harvest sooner.  Now that he has his leaves, what next?

He must first lay out the leaves so that any surface moisture will escape. Then the leaves must be lightly broken, and the process repeated until all the moisture is gone. To prevent further fermentation and decomposition, the tea must be fired.  Mikhail could do this in his oven.  Usually the leaves are then cut, large cuts to be used for loose leaf tea while smaller bits would go into teabags.

Considering that Mikhail is enough of a tea aficionado to grow his own tea, I can only assume that he would want to process it correctly. Or maybe he just lays the leaves out to dry or uses fresh leaves.  Like the numbers, this is yet another "Lost" mystery that may never be solved.

(I do think it is a safe guess that 4 8 15 16 23 42 are not his steeping times)

Tea V: Lost

For those who are fans of the television show "Lost," last night's episode finally revealed the identity of the one-eyed man seen in "The Cost of Living."

For those who have not yet seen the episode, I won't spoil it, but there is one important fact that I must share. When serving iced tea to two other characters, "Patchy" mentions that he grew his own tea. Now, this I have to admire. One can only assume that if the Dharma Initiative provided the tea, it would be of inferior, Lipton-esque quality, and most likely stale by this time.  Dissatisfied, Patchy acquired quality tea the only way he could: he grew it himself!

This is in fact quite feasible on the Island, as some varieties of tea flourish in tropical climates. The ideal temperature for growing tea is fifty to eighty degrees fahrenheit, and the plant does best in regions that receive eighty to ninety inches of rainfall a year at elevations from one thousand to seven thousand feet above sea level.  Certainly there are regions of the Island that fit this description.

However, one must marvel at the amount of work Patchy had to perform for those three glasses of iced tea.

Her Majesty and Her Majesty

Imagine the pressure to play the (living) Queen of England. Yet Helen Mirren did an absolutely incredible job. Such an incredible job that the real Queen may invite her for tea, according to a recent article in the Washington Post

Tea at Buckingham Palace, just imagine. The question is, what estate will the Darjeeling come from? Wherever it's from, I'm sure it's first flush. Ph2007022600766

Kate Moss

Kate Moss is one celebrity who loves tea. According to Bigelow Tea, she drinks up to twelve cups of tea per day!

This model is also featured in a Virgin Mobile ad, making tea.

If drinking twelve cups of tea can make you a supermodel, I think I'm on my way to a great career.
